Turtles

The oldest animals on earth, but unfortunately an endangered species.

Sea turtles in the Maldives

The Maldives largely has two different species of turtles. Namely the Hawksbill Sea Turtle and the Green Sea Turtle. These turtles are often found in the coral reefs and shallow waters around the islands. The Maldives is a good place for turtles as they can lay their eggs in the sand. Turtles often return to the beaches where they hatched themselves to lay their eggs, which usually happens during the breeding season, which varies by species. Maldives’ beaches offer suitable conditions for egg-laying, such as soft sandy beaches and a warm climate.

Where can you spot them?

When you go snorkelling or diving in the Maldives, you may come across turtles. The Maldives has several locations where you can see them. One popular spot is the Baa Atoll Marine Protected Area. There you will find large turtles. Basically, you can find them everywhere, even in the shallow waters. This is where you will find hawksbill turtles. The turtles like to swim along the coral reefs.

Seeing turtles during a liveaboard

Diving with sea turtles in the Maldives is one of the most special experiences you can have as a diver. While diving in the Maldives, you may come across turtles feeding on coral or seaweed, or just quietly moving through the water. We have some examples for you.

An endangered species

Sea turtles are one of the world’s oldest reptiles and today they are an endangered species. The biggest threat is that their habitat is being destroyed. There is nowhere for turtles to lay their eggs because the seawater is polluted. There are a number of other factors involved. Think of tourism or fishing. They get caught in nets or plastic as a result. Fortunately, there are organisations like WWF that want to protect endangered species. They make sure there is enough room for the eggs.

How long can a turtle live?

Turtles can live super long. Although the exact lifespan of sea turtles is difficult to determine, it is believed that under natural conditions they can live for 50 to 80 years. Some turtles have even lived to be more than 100 years old. However, it depends on their habitat.
